SCALA Guidance Brief: Private sector mapping, outreach and engagement in climate-responsive agrifood systems

May 2, 2023

Food and agriculture companies and relevant private sector actors are key partners in meeting the global agenda for addressing climate change. SCALA programme recognizes the unique role of the private sector in spurring innovation and investment for transformative climate action in the agriculture and land use sectors. This guidance note illustrates three broad intervention areas. These interventions are crucial to addressing barriers to PSE in climate action such as a perceived gap in the alignment of public and private sector objectives, a limited understanding of climate risks and business opportunities, insufficient incentives, and a lack of opportunities and investable ideas that are of adequate scale which offer risk-adjusted returns for their investment. However, given that most SCALA countries are still in the exploratory phases of engaging the private sector in climate action, the prospect may seem like a formidable task. To assist SCALA countries in this endeavor, PSE guidance briefs are designed corresponding to the SCALA PSE intervention areas to assist country teams to engage with the private sector effectively. These briefs will be complemented with calls to provide technical guidance tailored to countries’ specific contexts.
