Jakarta, 06 September - UNDP in partnership with Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection and Ministry of Finance this week hosted a regional workshop that aims to promote the integration of gender equality and social inclusion in climate budgeting, a key intervention that support countries meet climate action targets.

Attended by 12 countries, the South-South Exchange Regional Workshop also disseminated findings in a joint UNDP report published last year which found that many women beneficiaries faced greater difficulties in accessing finance in the context of climate actions compared to their male counterparts.

Titled, “Integrating gender equality and social inclusion in climate budgeting and planning processes & innovative climate finance in the Asia-Pacific Region’’, the workshop was hosted in a hybrid mode to allow participation from countries that are still under COVID-19 pandemic restriction.

“To combat against challenges caused by climate change we need global cooperation and strong commitment. We also need to focus on promoting gender equality, human rights and poverty reduction to achieve 2030 Agenda,” Lenny Rosalin, Deputy Minister for Gender Equality, Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection from Indonesia, in her opening remarks.

Masyita Crystallin, Special Staff of the Minister of Finance from the Ministry of Finance, said that gender-focused climate budgeting and planning can support Indonesia meet its emission target by 2030.

“The key to achieving this lies in leveraging financing from public, private and alternative sources, as well as the participation from all stakeholders, including women,” said Ms. Crystalin in her opening remarks.

UNDP Indonesia Resident Representative, Norimasa Shimomura said the workshop demonstrates the Government of Indonesia’s commitment to advance gender equality in climate action and the sustainable development agenda.

“we should examine more closely how our machinery could re-set our game plan to address the widening inequalities. This is why today's workshop has become more critical than ever because, we believe climate finance can offer real opportunities to support communities in the most vulnerable positions, particularly women and the poorest,” said Mr. Shimomura.

The workshop was also convened under the auspices of the Gender and Social Inclusion (GSI) Expert Reference Group of the CFN, co-chaired by UNWOMEN and UNDP. The Climate Finance Network, led by UNDP, with financial contribution from the UK Government (FCDO) and the Government of Sweden (SIDA), also supports the meeting.
