As the world advances into 2026 and works to translate the outcomes of COP30 into tangible action, the imperative to move decisively from NDC planning to NDC implementation has never been clearer. The latest generation of NDCs represents the highest level of ambition to date: more robust, more detailed, and more aligned with investment pathways for sustainable development. Countries have laid the groundwork and are signalling readiness to advance implementation across sectors. This is an opportunity to accelerate both climate action and sustainable development.
To fulfill the Secretary-General’s directive on support to NDC implementation, the “Climate Promise: Forward” initiative has been developed by UNDP together with the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and the UN Development Coordination Office, and in consultation with the COP Presidencies and UN entities. “Climate Promise: Forward” responds to the overwhelming demand from developing countries for support on NDC implementation and provides a framework for continued UN cooperation based on the four evidence-based levers for NDC implementation and SDG acceleration.
Supporting countries to shift from ambition to action, the Climate Promise: Forward will be embedded into existing UN Country Team (UNCT) processes, platforms, country programming mechanisms and coordination structures, including the design and implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks, UNCT workplans, UN entity Country Programme Documents, and UN joint programmes. This effort will bring together the ecosystem of UN support on NDCs in-country, alongside other partners – from multilateral development banks, development finance institutions and bilateral donors to civil society and private actors, in close coordination with the NDC Partnership and its members.
This 60-minute high-level event aims to:
- Reaffirm collective commitment and international cooperation for climate action and implementation of the Paris Agreement despite global challenges;
- Showcase the Climate Promise: Forward as the UN system’s unified and sustained support vehicle for implementation of NDCs and NAPs, in response to the SG’s directive, helping to bridge political momentum from COP30 towards COP31 and beyond; and
- Demonstrate partnership in action by showcasing how countries, UN entities, donors, MDBs, DFIs, civil society and private actors can work together through a coherent support architecture to accelerate NDC implementation.
- Highlight how Climate Promise: Forward can help match country demand with relevant UN system expertise, financing partners and implementation solutions.
