NDC Status

Barbados submitted its latest NDC in August 2025.

Key highlights from the NDC
  • The third NDC outlines clear sectoral targets for mitigation and a robust framework for adaptation.
  • The NDC commits to an economy-wide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 45 percent below the 2008 level by 2035.  An unconditional target of 95 percent emissions reduction in the electricity sector is now expected to be achieved by 2035.
  • The third NDC also introduces sector-specific decarbonization pathways, especially in energy, including transport and cooling, and emphasizes net-zero emissions by 2050, with clearer interim milestones.
  • The adaptation component of the third NDC has a deeper focus on climate resilience, especially for coastal zones, agriculture, and water resources, prioritizes projects in the Water and Sanitation, Energy, Coastal and Marine Protection, Agriculture, and Housing sectors, aligned with the country’s Plan for Investment in Prosperity and Resilience (2024).
  • In its third NDC, Barbados includes a section on loss and damage, as well as gender-responsive and socially inclusive adaptation strategies.
  • UNDP has provided support in collaboration with CARICOM and the University of West Indies to ensure a more inclusive NDC development process through extensive stakeholder engagement.
