Human Development Index ranking
A lower number means a better human development score. Based on the Human Development Index (2023), developed by UNDP. NDC Status
Burkina Faso submitted its third NDC in December 2025.
Key highlights from the NDC
- Burkina Faso's third NDC reiterates the country’s commitment to pursue efforts consistent with limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C and aligns its long-term objectives with the Long-term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) to 2050.
- The NDC sets an economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target of 30.87 percent by 2030 compared to business-as-usual. There is an expansion of sectoral coverage to include energy, transport, industry, waste, as well as agriculture, forestry and other land uses.
- The country significantly enhances its adaptation ambition, clearly articulating its actions as well as the GHG emission reduction co-benefits of those actions. Adaptation priorities are specified and are aligning its goals with the National Adaptation Plan (2024–2028) (in French).
- Burkina Faso’s NDC demonstrates strong integration of cross-cutting issues, including gender-transformative approaches, social inclusion, youth, climate security, land tenure, Loss and Damage, and nature-based solutions.
- The NDC provides a comprehensive costing framework, estimating total implementation needs at US$7.76 billion, and clearly distinguishes between unconditional and conditional financing.
- UNDP led the drafting of the third NDC in collaboration with the NDC Partnership, GGGI, and ENABEL.
NAP Status
Burkina Faso was the first country to submit its National Adaptation Plan to the UNFCCC in October 2015, with support from UNDP and the GEF as the implementing agency. In 2025, Burkina Faso submitted an updated NAP (in French) to the UNFCCC.
