Nationally Determined Contribution Support Programme – achievements and lessons learned

Established in 2017, the Nationally Determined Contributions Support Programme (NDC SP) has worked through a nationally-driven and inclusive process to support developing countries to contribute to the goals laid out in the Paris Agreement and, through this, achieve sustainable development gains.

This product series captures the NDC SP’s achievements and lessons learned from its work enabling 47 countries and territories across every region of the globe to implement and enhance their climate action plans, or NDCs.

The programme initially focused on five key work areas: ambitious leadership, integrated climate governance, NDC mitigation actions, climate finance, and private sector engagement. Demonstrating adaptability to emerging needs, a sixth work area was added after the COVID-19 pandemic to support countries with a green recovery that reinforces climate resilience.

As the NDC SP comes to a close in 2025, this series offers reflections on these work areas through the following products:

  • 1 flagship report that explores achievements across the whole programme over its lifetime.

  • 7 lessons learned briefs that explore in more detail themes surrounding engaging the private sector, gender equality, climate-related laws and legislation, financing mitigation action, NDC roadmaps and implementation strategies, coordination mechanisms, and planning for implementation.

  • 5 country case studies highlighting the NDC SP work in Chile, Ecuador, Ghana, Tunisia and Viet Nam.
