Fiji submitted its third NDC in November 2025.
Key highlights from the NDC
- Fiji's third NDC welcomes the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the obligations of states with respect to climate change and explicitly calls for all Parties' NDCs to be aligned with what is needed to preserve 1.5°C.
- With its third NDC, Fiji strengthens its trajectory on mitigation by committing to reduce energy-sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 36 percent below business-as-usual by 2035, and a 100 percent renewable electricity target by 2035. The achievement of Fiji’s third NDC targets and objectives is contingent upon access to new and additional financing. The NDC's implementation is positioned alongside Fiji's net-zero by 2050 direction, established in earlier commitments.
- On adaptation, Fiji aligns priorities with the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) and continues to emphasize resilience that prioritize actions that respond to the needs of its most vulnerable segments. Fiji highlights eight priorities (food and agricultural production; infrastructure and human settlements; health impacts and health services; water supply and sanitation; poverty eradication and livelihoods; disaster risk reduction; ecosystems and biodiversity (forests, oceans); and cultural heritage and knowledge).
- Fiji introduces the loss and damage response commitments as the third pillar of its third NDC and identifies five targets on institutional arrangements and analytical capacity, financial and national systems for addressing loss and damage, food and agricultural production, land loss and damage to human settlements, and disruption and damage to cultural practice, traditional norms, knowledge, and heritage.
- Fiji's latest NDC frames climate action as a whole-of-society and sustainable development agenda, with strengthened attention to just and equitable transition. It also integrates social and gender considerations and seeks to leverage broader sustainable development priorities across actions.
- Fiji’s third NDC process was underpinned by extensive stakeholder consultations to reflect national priorities and circumstances.
